Licensing
The Licensing tab displays the installed product license and lets you install or remove a license key.
Overview
The license key determines the product name shown in the console and which features are available. Each key carries an expiry date, and the console validates the key when you install it and at startup.
When you install or remove a key, the product name and navigation update immediately. No page reload is required.
Current License
When a valid license is installed, the Current License panel shows:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Product | The licensed product name. |
| Customer Name | The organization name embedded in the license key when it was generated. |
| Issue Date | The date the key was generated. |
| Expiry Date | The date after which the key is no longer valid. A color-coded badge shows the days remaining. |
The expiry badge uses these colors:
- Green — more than 30 days remaining.
- Amber — 7 to 30 days remaining.
- Red — 7 days or fewer remaining.
A red banner appears across the top of the panel if the key has expired or is not valid. The banner stays until you replace the key. Install a valid key to clear it, and do not leave an expired or invalid key in place.
No license installed
When no license key is installed, the system runs in default mode with all features visible and functional. This is the expected state for development and trial deployments.
Install a license key
Paste the license key into the License Key field, a multiline text area that accepts a base64-encoded key. The key is usually a single long string. Paste it exactly as received, including any padding characters.
Click Install to validate and install the key. If validation fails, an error message appears inline and the key is not saved. On success:
- The Current License panel updates to show the new product, customer name, and expiry.
- The navigation bar updates to reflect the licensed product, and some tabs may appear or disappear.
- The product name in the page header updates.
Remove a license
Remove License uninstalls the current key and returns the system to default unlicensed mode. The navigation and product name update immediately. Use it when you switch between license keys or to reset to the unlicensed default.
Managed Device Subscription
The Managed Device Subscription card, below the license key, is a separate license from the license key above. It sets how much managed storage you are entitled to protect: a number of TB of PowerScale capacity (per node type A, F, or H) or of ECS / ObjectScale capacity.
Superna supplies the subscription as a signed Superna Data Security for AI Infrastructure (SDSI) .zip bundle. Click Choose File, then Upload Subscription to install one.
- SDSI SKUs are per TB, for a 1 to 5 year term. The ordered quantity is the number of TB.
- You can install several bundles, for example a PowerScale bundle and an ECS bundle, or a capacity add-on. Each bundle adds its capacity to the total.
Installed bundles
Installed Bundles lists every bundle with its SKU, number of entitlements, and a status badge.
| Badge | Meaning |
|---|---|
| N days left | The bundle is active. The badge turns amber 60 days before expiry. |
| Expired Nd ago — not counted | The subscription has ended. The bundle stays listed so you can see what you had, but its capacity no longer counts. |
| Dell OEM — not accepted | A Dell OEM license. This product accepts Superna licenses only, so the bundle grants no capacity. You see this only for a bundle installed before the check existed. |
| Not an SDSI license — not counted | A license issued for another Superna product. It grants no capacity and raises no alarms. You see this only for a bundle installed before the check existed. Remove it with its Remove button. |
The Licensed capacity table for each platform shows what you are licensed for, per node type (PowerScale) or in total (ECS / ObjectScale), as the capacity check counts it.
- Licensed is the sum across every bundle that grants that capacity, and Bundles shows how many contribute.
- Only active grants add up. Expired, OEM, and non-SDSI grants appear on their own greyed rows with the amount struck through.
- A bundle's base, cluster, and support licenses are not listed here. Their dates are on the bundle row.
Licenses are never removed automatically. An expired bundle stays installed and visible until you click its Remove button.
What the subscription gates
The subscription licenses the product. It does not switch features on or off. It gates only adding a Kubernetes cluster, PowerScale cluster, or ECS / ObjectScale device. Add Cluster, Add PowerScale Cluster, and Add Device stay disabled until at least one active subscription is installed. Existing clusters and devices keep working, and stay editable, after a subscription expires.
Uploads that are refused
- A license for another product — the message says the bundle is not an SDSI license. Ask Superna for an SDSI subscription bundle.
- A Dell OEM bundle — the message says it is a Dell OEM license and cannot be installed. Ask Superna for a Superna-issued license.
- A bundle that has already expired — install its renewal instead.
- A bundle that is not valid yet — its start date is in the future. Upload it on or after its start date.
- A bundle whose licenses are already installed from another file, or that mixes licenses from different bundles.
License alarms
The License Alarms panel at the top of the Licensing tab lists every active license alarm, with readable details (for example, "Node F Capacity — 45 days left") and a Clear button. It shows them even when the Alarms page is not available.
| Alarm | Severity | Raised | Email by default | Clears |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LI-001 License expiring soon (license key) | Warning | Daily, from 30 days before the key expires | Yes | Manually |
| LI-002 License expired (license key) | Critical | Daily once expired | Yes, immediately | Manually |
| LI-003 Subscription license expiring soon | Warning | Daily, from 2 months before a subscription expires | Yes | Manually |
| LI-004 Subscription license expired | Critical | Daily once expired | Yes, immediately | Manually |
| LI-005 Capacity exceeds subscription entitlement | Warning | After each K8 scan and license change | Yes | Automatically, once capacity is within the license again |
| LI-006 Unsupported node model for licensing | Warning | After each K8 scan and license change | No | Automatically, once every node model is classified |
- LI-005 never blocks anything. Protection continues. Once a subscription expires, its capacity stops counting, so LI-005 can follow LI-004.
- Change the email settings for each alarm under Settings > Email Alerts. An alarm you turn off stays off.
- LI-003 and LI-004 stay quiet for a grant that another installed bundle already continues, for example an old bundle you kept listed after installing its renewal. A Dell OEM or non-SDSI bundle never raises them, because it grants nothing. A bundle's support key does not raise them either: the capacity licenses set the subscription's end date, so an expired support key alone does not mark the bundle expired.
Workflows
Install a license key received from Superna
- Copy the full license key string provided by Superna.
- Open the Licensing tab.
- Paste the key into the License Key field.
- Click Install.
- Confirm that the Current License panel shows the expected product, customer name, and expiry date.
- Verify that the navigation bar reflects the correct product mode.
Renew an expiring license
- Contact Superna to obtain a new license key before the current key expires.
- Install the new key as described above. Installing a new key replaces the existing one, so you do not need to remove the old key first.
Renew a subscription
- Ask Superna for the renewal bundle before the LI-003 two-month warning runs out.
- Upload it on or after its start date. Its capacity adds to the total immediately.
- When the old bundle expires, it shows Expired — not counted and stops adding capacity. Leave it listed, or remove it with its Remove button.
Revert to default mode
- Click Remove License.
- Confirm the prompt.
The system returns to default unlicensed mode immediately.
Tips
- Keep a copy of the installed license key in a secure location outside the application. If the system data is lost, you must install the key again.
- The license is validated at startup. If the system restarts with an expired key, it starts in default mode, which may change the navigation that users see.
- The amber badge at 30 days leaves enough time to request a renewal before any disruption.
